What are Probiotics and do they work ?

Probiotics, or ‘good bacteria’, seem to be in everything these days from yoghurts and chocolates to face creams. But what are probiotics, and do they actually work?
Probiotics such as acidophilus are micro-oganisms, which are beneficial for the human host. Probiotics can be beneficial in a number of ways, from aiding the breakdown of foods and absorption of nutrients, to displacing harmful bacteria in the body. Prebiotics, on the other hand, are the food source for your probiotics. These are complex carbohydrates which can be found in certain foods such as garlic, leeks and onions; and when they enter the human body they feed nothing but the probiotics in the system. So in a nutshell, probiotics and prebiotics are little helpers for your gut.
