Look after your teeth with Coconut Oil

Monday, September 03, 2012

Yet more on the benefits of Coconut oil by Janey Lee Grace The mainstream are finally cottoning on the benefits of Coconuts, Hurrah ! In my recent blog about the wonders of raw organic extra virgin coconut oil (my recommendation is Tiana www.tiana-coconut.com) I talked about the benefits of coconuts but even I didn’t realise that it could help fight the main bug behind tooth decay..

According to an article by science correspondent Fiona Macrae in the Daily Mail Scientists tested coconut oil against Streptococcus Mutans – a sugar-loving bacterium that clings to teeth and produces acid causing them to rot. Fiona reports ‘ When the oil was treated with digestive enzymes it became a powerful killer of the bug/ It paves the way for toothpastes and mouthwashes containing coconut as an active ingredient. Lead researcher Dr Damien Brady, of the Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland, said: ‘Dental caries is a commonly overlooked health problem affecting 60 to 90 per cent of children and the majority of adults in industrialised countries. ‘Incorporating enzyme-modified coconut oil into dental hygiene products would be an attractive alternative to chemical additives, particularly as it works at relatively low concentrations.’

The Daily Mail reports that the researcher intends to find out if the enzyme treated coconut oil has any other ‘killer’ qualities. Crikey we can tell him that ! Coconut oil (irrespective of being Enzyme treated) can help with Digestive Problems, Weight loss, Chrons disease and Candida. It’s great for athletes too. You can add Tiana Coconut Oil to smoothies, use it in cooking or to fry as it doesn’t degrade at high temperatures and even spread it on toast. To treat Chrons disease you can make a special drink. Tiana also make Coconut butter which has omega three added and is great for baking and spreading on toast and Coconut Flour, brilliant for anyone on a Gluten free diet. www.tiana-coconut.com Come and like Tiana on facebook and follow on Twitter

The truth about Coconuts

Monday, August 13, 2012

It won’t have escaped your notice that there’s some controversy and debate as to their health benefits.   In her ‘Don’t be Fooled by….health foods that aren’t really healthy’ column in the Daily Mail recently, Angela Dowden declared…. ‘An 80 gram portion of fresh coconut  flesh can count as one of your five a day, but, very unusually for a fruit, its astonishingly high in saturated fat.  In fact coconut contains even more saturated fat than whipping cream.   A typical serving of 80 grams supplies 283 calories and 24 grams of saturated fat, more than the guideline daily amount of 20 grams a day.’

I’m not a nutritionist but I’d like to dispute just about every word there!    For starters most of us know that the whole ‘five a day’ concept is severely flawed, we need probably more like ‘15 or 20 a day’  of 100 per cent natural fresh fruit and veg, but my take on it is if it actually is 100 per cent natural and preferably organic and seasonally locally grown too…then who’s counting ?  As for Coconut flesh being ‘astonishingly high in saturated fat’  - don’t get me started !
I believe fats are vital for us and ‘good fats’ are not as villainous as the media would have us believe. Fats found in ‘real’ food are essential, (that’s 100 whole foods without processing)    Even Olive oil, well documented to be a good ‘monounsaturated’ fat, is also 14 per cent ‘saturated fat’.   The myth has arisen because most anti-fat arguments are really referring to ‘trans-fats’ or hydrogenated fats, the ones found in all processed foods, such as biscuits and pastries,  I’m unsure if they even deserve the accolade ‘foods’ they are usually simply calorie dense products that offer little in the way of nutrition.

But let’s remind ourselves of the amazing nutritional benefits of coconut oil.   Extra Virgin coconut oil (especially if its high cold pressed, one hundred per cent raw and organic such as the one I most recommend - Tiana Coconut oil), contains medium-chain fatty acids, which are absorbed directly by the liver and turned into energy straight away and not stored as fat, unlike all other types of saturated fat. They play a fundamental role in cleansing the body from toxins.  Virgin coconut oil, specifically is ideal to purify the body and provide the energy required when less food is being consumed. It’s crucial to those who suffer from Candida or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome as it’s completely free from sugar and other carbohydrates which efficiently starve all Candida in the system.  It’s good for fixing all types of digestive problems and restoring healthy balance to the digestive system.  Coconut Oil also contains high levels of Lauric acid, which has strong antiviral properties that can protect against and even destroy lipid-coated viruses like herpes and flu.   (Lauric acid is one the main components of breast milk)
In her article Angela does acquiesce -

‘On the bright side, a high proportion of the saturated fats in coconut are medium chain triglycerides, which have the unusual benefits of increasing the amount of calories burnt off as heat- and therefore not laid down as fat, these triglycerides might not be quite as bad in terms of their artery clogging effects as other saturated fats either, although the jury is still out on this issue,’

Well the jury isn’t out as far as I’m concerned, I’m certain that if the coconut flesh is fresh it will do you no harm, as for coconut oil, it’s a superior culinary oil that is a brilliant alternative to cooking oils, is a fantastic dietary supplement, and due to the way it speeds up the metabolism it’s an excellent aid to weight loss.
Only buy the best. I use the Tiana Organic Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Coconut Oil - the only one that is certified fair trade.  It’s also 100 per cent raw, free from GM, trans fats and cholesterol, its unrefined and non hydrogenated.   Tiana also do excellent Gluten Free Organic Coconut Flour and the wondrous Premium Organic Raw Crystallised Coconut Nectar.  I feel some yummy treats coming on and I won’t be limiting my amounts, or worrying about the calories.   So there!

Vitamin D - the sunshine vitamin

Monday, August 13, 2012

You will have seen the recent news about Vitamin D, I've been banging on about this for ever and a day and I'm thrilled that its finally out there !!    I've long held a very controversial view re exposure to the sun, lets face it was not so long ago that sunshine was held in high esteem and Naturopaths prescribed sun 'bathing' in controlled conditions.   'Heliotherapy' was important and the sun and its benefits revered.  Of course we have an ozone layer to think of and I'm not suggesting we all lie flat out for two weeks of the year and burn.

I regularly take the oral Vit D spray from Better You and they responded to the advice from Professor Dame Sally Davies, recommending that all children aged six months to five years should take vitamin D supplements, particularly during winter, to prevent the condition Rickets and other bone conditions.    Andrew Thomas, Founder of BetterYou says: "BetterYou has led the field in vitamin D innovation for more than two years, producing the market's first vitamin D daily oral spray, in a range of strengths, catering for every vulnerable group.'

Heres an ARTICLE

“Particularly suitable for infants and older children the BetterYou spray is an excellent method of supplementation as there are no difficult tablets to swallow. In addition vitamin D relies on our bloodstream for transportation rather than the gut.   An oral spray ensures faster uptake via the mucous membrane, entering the bloodstream three or four times faster with little wastage”

DLux400 product provides 400iu of vitamin D in a single spray - the recommended daily amount for children under five years old. Other products offer 1000iu and 3000iu per spray as well as a formulation including vitamin D, folic acid and vitamins B1 and B6 for use during pregnancy and nursing.

If you prefer to take supplements then you won't go far wrong with the excellent

Viridian Vitamin D (Vegan) 1000iu

90 Veg Caps
Product Code: 271V
Viridian supplements are excellent in that they contain no nasties or fillers and are very good value.

We has a great day..!

A brilliant day at the Summer Body and Soul Event on Saturday... Got this lovely testimonial from Donna... " woke up this morning after a day of overwhelming and quite frankly shocking messages yesterday (mingled with glorious treats!) and I am in awe of what Janey is doing, how she is choosing to live.

This amazing woman is a mine of information and it’s important and valuable information that she gives form her heart and with passion. She is by no means “preachy” about it, she’s just saying “look, this is what’s out there, this is what’s happening and this is what I’m doing , to protect my family and look after myself” and as she says ,”tick the Eco box “.

I feel so inspired and determined to put in the work and effort to begin to make changes in the way I live. Like she says “ if I can do it, anyone can do it… and do it one thing at a time so that the changes you make are actually sustainable “.

We can all do with taking a leaf out of her book and make ourselves more conscious of the way we choose to live, to do our bit for ourselves and our home. After all, it’s about Love isn’t it? If you choose to live as natural a life as possible , you are giving Love to yourself, your family and the Earth.

I would urge anyone to get to one of her talks and to listen carefully! She has done a vast amount of work researching what’s safe and what definitely isn’t and more importantly, she’s tried everything for herself and is wholeheartedly sharing all her gems with us. Janey, I salute you. "   Donna O'Hare

Thanks Donna that's so nice to get feedback like that!

Thanks to everyone who contributed towards the goody bags, Detox your World, Weleda, Eco2life, Ohso, Jason Natural Skincare, and look out for the next one in the Autumn.

The Intimate truth - How women really feel about their bodies after giving birth

Monday, April 30, 2012

My recent survey 'You and Your body after childbirth' generated some fascinating responses -delighted to see that over 90 per cent of mums attampted to breastfeed from the off, sadly after birth 41.8 per cent experienced mood swings and 79.6 per cent were too tired to make love.   Following on from last weeks news story about Helena Bonham Carter needing to use nappies on the set of HARRY POTTER as her bladder was so  weak, shes not alone, over 50 per cent of mums reported 'embarrassing leaks'  - For once I have the answer !! Check out The Pelvic Toner

New research suggests that in the weeks and months after giving birth almost half of the 150 women surveyed said that they had experienced mood swings, 40% suffered from post natal depression, and 45% suffered from lack of sleep and lack of confidence. The online survey ‘You and Your Body after childbirth’ carried out by Janey Lee Grace author of Joyful Pregnancy in conjunction with The PelvicToner (
www.pelvictoner.co.uk) also showed around a third of women experienced weight problems and haemorrhoids.   Even more experienced a weak bladder.

In a recent interview actress Helena Bonham Carter revealed that her pelvic floor was so weak after giving birth 12 weeks earlier that she gushed all over the Harry Potter set !  ‘Really I couldn’t jump up and down and scream without losing most of my bodily liquid.’  She eventually resorted to nappies!  She’s not alone -  according to the survey,  over 50% of new mums suffered lack of bladder control and ‘embarrassing leaks’ when they coughed, sneezed, laughed and exercised.

There is considerable ignorance about what happens to the pelvic floor during childbirth and of the consequences of not taking early action to restore and strengthen the pelvic floor muscle.   For many mums, the shock and embarrassment of stress incontinence often first hits home when they get back to the gym or in rough and tumble with their toddler. Trampolines and bouncy castles are often mentioned!

Weak pelvic floor muscles are also a key cause of a lacklustre sex life.  A Lancet article estimates that 1 in 6 women will experience sexual problems after childbirth.  When asked whether love making was as good as before childbirth almost 80% of respondents in the ‘You and Your Body after childbirth’ survey said they felt ‘too tired to make love’ in the first year after having a baby.   Just over half of women also felt ‘less desirable’.

Clinical trials show that there is an effective solution, and it’s available on prescription. (Free with maternity exemption certificate).  The PelvicToner is the only pelvic toning device that has been shown in clinical trials to offer the best hope of an early restoration of muscle tone – most users also report an improved sex life and 62% also reported that their partner noticed improved vaginal tightness.

The two-year randomised study of The PelvicToner at the Bristol Urological Institute (BUI) found that it was ''easy to use'' and proved ''particularly helpful'' in the majority of cases. 86 per cent of participants who used The PelvicToner reported a ''significant'' improvement in their condition.

The PelvicToner costs £31.99 from pharmacies or from www.pelvictoner.co.uk

And Congratulations to Lisa Moore -  winner of the prize draw for free goodies !

  • Ninety per cent of respondents attempted to breastfeed from the outset but sixty per cent of those experienced soreness and just over twelve per cent had problems with lack of flow.
  • When asked ‘to what extent do you agree with the sentence ‘My body is back to its pre pregnancy state’ over sixty per cent of respondents said they were ‘not sure’
  • Sixteen per cent of respondents needed episiotomy and stitches, twenty seven per cent needed stitches to repair tearing and sixteen per cent had a C section.
